Board Minutes March, April & May 2016

Minutes from May 9th, 2016:

Convened at 7:04pm at Creative Chakra…present were Steve Schroeder, President, Sandie West, Vice President, Alaric Valentin, Ric Underwood, Treasurer and Brittney Rae, Concierge for WSBIG

Brittney gave a briefing on the creation and history of WSBIG (Washington Square Business Improvement Group)…she went on to explain WSBIG’s accomplishments, current projects and future plans.  Included in this briefing, she mentioned that WSBIG has elected a board and established four main committees (Parking, Safety, Street Improvements and Community Events).  The purpose of this meeting is for WSBIG & MPCC to work on projects together in the future.

The Parking committee has an upcoming meeting on May 20th.  They have been working closely with the county to try and resolve issues in the Washington square beach parking lot.  They would like to install a ‘counter’ at the entrance of the lot which notifies consumers how many spaces are available…also they would like to eliminate the need for the manned station and only use the paid meters.  The Safety committee has been working closely with the LAPD and Captain Alberca…the local restaurants like the Whaler, Hinano, Cow’s End, C&O and others all offer the police ‘incentive’ discounts or free meals depending on if they are in uniform or not, and patrol the area more for doing so.  They are still trying to work out plans to get them to have a greater presence after 8pm.  Alaric mentioned the idea of starting a substation for the police down here the beach lot.

The Street Improvements committee has begun cleanup projects of local neighboring streets such as Strongs drive from Washington to Driftwood.  Their concentration area is from the beach down to Leona restaurant area.  This committee would concentrate on gentrification and maintenance/cleanups.

The Community Events committee is planning a Chili Cook-off, Summer Movies at the Venice pier, Surf and Skate days, and a possible farmers market in the beach lot.  Brittney also mentioned that Mike Bonin’s office has officially endorsed the WSBIG and the city will be placing WSBIG signs in the geographic area of the organization on Washington Blvd.

Brittney is to forward us the quotes the WSBIG received for the private security detail they initially inquired about.  The MPCC can use these quotes to inquire about possible private security details for the peninsula.  WSBIG board meetings are held monthly, and committee meetings are held quarterly.  The MPCC expressed its interest in working with WSBIG’s committee’s and attending these quarterly meetings.  Brittney is to make a formal request at their next board meeting to approve this request.
